Transportation Overview | Air | Highway | Freight | Rail | Mass Transit
Utah's mass transit system has grown considerably over the past 5 years. In 1999, Utah's first TRAX light rail line between Salt Lake City and Sandy opened to an enthusiastic ridership. In less than one year, 5 million Utahns had taken a ride on the light rail line. During the Olympic Winter Games in February 2002, over 4 million riders were transported during the two weeks of the games.
TRAX currently has two lines in service with a third under construction to the University Hospital on the campus of the University of Utah. This line is expected to open in the fall of 2004. The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) has purchased over 175 miles of railroad corridors along the Wasatch Front for future expansion of the TRAX light rail system, as well as a commuter rail system that will run from Brigham City to Payson, Utah.
Bus service is also available throughout most of the Wasatch Front including service for riders with disabilities.
