Labor Cost & Earnings | Distribution of Earnings
As measured by employment sector earnings, the most important sector in the Utah economy is services. In 2002, education and health services were among the most dynamic performers. Financial activity, sparked by the low mortgage rates, grew substantially, and tourism sustained about 103,000 workers. In 2001, the next important sectors, following the various service industries, were "trade, transportation and utilities" and government employment. Utah defense-related spending increased by 23% in 2001. Construction has proved a volatile category, with significant growth corresponding to the preparation for the 2002 Olympics and a corresponding decline afterwards.
